With a background in specialist healthcare communications, Jono joined the BPS as Head of Communications and Development in 2009 with a remit to enhance the Society’s engagement with its members and the public. He has helped deliver a public relations portfolio that includes new online services, enhanced outreach activities, and improved relations with the media. In his time at BPS, Jono has also driven the Society’s journals and publications strategy, its relationships with national and international partners, and its collaboration on new initiatives in support of UK drug discovery, development and delivery.

Mike is an ACA-qualified Chartered Accountant with a wealth of financial and business expertise. His priority is to support the Society’s 5-year strategy with robust afinancial and business disciplines that protect, diversify and grow income while increasing efficiency. He is responsible for corporate services, including finance, IT, HR and facilities. Mike succeeded in a similar role at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health where he supported a period of fourfold income growth that included a significant income from publishing. He joins BPS from Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research where he recently changed their financial strategy and enabled them to safely commit their highest-ever annual sum towards research.

Anna was awarded a BSc in Pharmacology from Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Biomedical Science, with time spent at Pfizer (UK) and Cel-Sci (USA). She went on to complete her PhD and postdoctoral training in cellular and in vivo neuroscience at Imperial College London where she used genetic mouse models to study how natural sleep pathways interact with sedatives and general anaesthetics. She co-founded ScienceGrrl in 2012, a Not for Profit organisation supporting and showcasing women and girls in science - leading on organisational strategy, policy work and social media.

Karen Schlaegel, (BA) Hons, studied for a degree in European Business in the UK and France. After her graduation she returned to Germany where she worked as a conference producer. She then moved on to a Not for Profit organization where she managed a European media art project. Prior to joining the BPS as Secretariat Services Manager in March 2008, she worked at the International Association for the Study of Obesity as Administrative Officer. On 1 June 2011 she was appointed as Head of Meetings and Events.

Katharine joined BPS from Virgo HEALTH, a communications consultancy for the healthcare industry, where she worked as Programme Director/Policy and Access Adviser. Katharine brings seven years of communications experience to BPS, across a number of disease areas and from the management of successful UK and international communications programmes.

David was formerly Executive Director, Strategic Innovation, at the Royal Society of Chemistry, leading the organisation’s business development planning for new products and services generating growth opportunities for the organisation. He was also responsible for directing business intelligence activities to provide customer, market and competitor analysis. He identified major strategic acquisition targets and potential business and/or technical partners in keeping with the RSC’s strategy. He was also responsible for all platform development for the delivery of RSC content as well as having responsibility for international strategy. Subsequent to working for the RSC he was Director, Academic Partnerships, at Qiqqa, a leading research management software technology. David has a PhD in biochemistry from Birmingham University and an MBA from the Open University.
Amandeep Bhardwaj, Finance Manager
Management accounts and reports, budgets and forecasts, expense and supplier payments and credit control.
Amandeep has a (BA) Hons in Accounting and Finance and is a Part Qualified ACCA Accountant who joined BPS in February 2015. Previously Amandeep worked for Nottingham CityCare CIC, a social, enterprise providing healthcare services within Nottingham as a Management Accountant, providing support to budget managers in order for them to manage their budgets effectively. She is currently studying to become a fully qualified Chartered Accountant.

Carolina Medal, BA (Joint Hons), IT Manager graduated in Digital Media and Mass Communications and worked as a freelance video editor and multimedia producer in a variety of projects for the education and charity sectors until she joined the Society in 2005. Carolina manages the Society’s IT and communications network and systems, including project management of technical implementations. Carolina is also responsible for strategic overview to meet future business and system requirements, provides first and second line IT support for the office, and looks after our Pharma-CAL-ogy e-learning software.

Ruth completed her Natural Sciences degree at Jesus College, University of Cambridge and joined BPS in July 2011. Previously Ruth worked for Aimhigher in City of Sunderland College encouraging young people from a non-traditional background to recognize their potential and progress onto Higher Education.

Hazel O'Mullan, BA (Hons) has been with the BPS since completing her degree in August 2000. She worked part time throughout her English Literature degree as the proof reader and general office administrator for a London based magazine. Hazel now has responsibility for delivering marketing and communications support for the Society's core activities, including education, meetings, publications and member services. Hazel also provides press office support, and has primary editorial responsibility for our website and social media channels.

Susanne joined BPS from the Royal Society of Medicine where she looked after a number of medical specialities and organised clinical and non clinical meetings and events. Previous to that Susanne lived and worked in Bournemouth and Brussels were she organised educational and pharmaceutical conferences in Europe and North America. At BPS Susanne is responsible for the logistical organisation and management of upcoming meetings and events.

Rebecca Tibbs completed her degree in Biochemistry at the University of Oxford and joined BPS in September 2012. Rebecca developed an interest in education and outreach work while leading a student-run campaign encouraging students to consider higher education at university, and has a particular interest in science outreach and education.

Before joining the BPS in May 2001, Paul managed the database for a company that serviced medical equipment in the Wellington, Portland and Princess Grace hospitals. He worked in the BJP Editorial Office before moving to Membership Services at the end of 2008. Paul now has responsibility for membership administration, including the management of the Society's prizes and awards, as well as office facilities at Angel Gate.
Lisa Deakin, Senior Journal Publishing Manager
Lisa joined Blackwell Publishing Limited (now John Wiley & Sons) in April 2004, as a Journal Publishing Manager responsible for a portfolio of dermatology, anaesthesiology and gastroenterology journals. She has previously worked for both Elsevier and The Royal Society of Medicine Press in a variety of editorial roles. Before entering medical/scientific publishing, she worked on mapping the mouse genome in the Human Genome Mapping Project and undertook post-graduate research, both in Imperial College London and the National Cancer Institute, Frederick, Maryland, on the mechanisms underlying the role of the human papillomavirus in cervical cancer. She graduated from Reading University, having read Biochemistry and Physiology with Chemistry. Lisa works closely with the BPS to manage the British Journal of Pharmacology & the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

Kim Harris, Editorial Assistant
Kim Harris BA(Hons) graduated from De Montfort University in 2006 with a degree in Graphic Design and worked for academic archaeological publisher Oxbow Books from 2007. She joined the Editorial Office at Wiley in March 2013 and is responsible for the administration of the BPS journals; working closely with editors, editorial board members, referees, authors and production staff to provide a high quality service. With a keen interest in both science and the humanities, she is currently exploring their interaction for an MA in Applied Art (taken part time) at London Metropolitan University.
